MI put forward the Tunisian Institute for Consumers that every day 900,000 loaves are at risk of being wasted during the month of Ramadan, while the country faces a decrease in wheat production and a large amount of money is allocated to the state for wheat importation and bread support. During an informative day to combat waste, organized at the beginning of Ramadan, the Institute for Consumption revealed that the food waste rate in this month varies between 15% and 30%, especially for bread which sees an increase in demand. There are about 900,000 loaves wasted every day, bringing the total to about 27 million loaves wasted during the month.
It has become evident to notice the amount of food wasted on the street, with garbage bins filled with large quantities and varieties of bread and different foods thrown away.
