Yesterday, the National Institute of Tunisian Heritage announced the discovery of ancient tombs in the western part of the country, in the Ksar province. Presumably, they belong to the late antiquity.
The archaeological site was accidentally discovered during the construction of a regional hospital in the Sbeiba area, belonging to the Ksar province. According to the institute, the excavations allowed to uncover a significant number of ancient tombs, and various artifacts and bone remains are preserved in the institute's repositories, where they will subsequently undergo studies by historians and anthropologists.
Information published yesterday about the site indicates two groups of tombs. The first consists of pits, in which at some point children were buried, which was a common method of burial among ancient civilizations. The second group of tombs includes burial trenches, where skeletons were found wrapped in clay ceramic tiles.
