Tunisia Rejects UN Human Rights Critique

Tunisia reacted to the statement of the high commissioner of the UN for human rights, Volker Turk, concerning the situation with human rights in the country, considering his statements "an error," and denied the prosecution of anyone judicially for their ideas. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated yesterday that it was "taken aback" by Turk's remarks about "false assertions and criticism." Tunisia expressed its unwillingness to accept criticism from the UN high commissioner for human rights, who last week called to cease "the arrests and arbitrary detentions of activists." Yesterday, court issued a ruling on the unlawful detention of Leyla Trabelsi, widow of former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, and their daughter Nasrin Ben Ali, and son-in-law Mohammedi Sahara Matari for 6 years in their absence.
